Getting ready the first time

When you take your toy out of the box, the first thing you should do is give it a quick once over. Look for any pits or tears in the surface. These could be a place to harbour bacteria, or lead to further tearing of the toy -- or you!. Replace such a toy right away. Also carefully check all the seams. On some occasions, these have sharp edges. Sure, adult toys with sharp edges should never be shipped in the first place, and we check known culprits before we ship them, but the reality is that some very fun toys need a little work before you can use them. In most cases, a nail file can be used to smooth out those edges and make what would have been an uncomfortable toy to use into one of your best friends. We can complain that the adult toy industry should have higher standards, but even the best companies are guilty of this.

Problem shooting

If the toy needs batteries, get good alkaline ones. If side by side, they usually go in opposite directions. If in a row, they usually go with the button end (positive) in first, with both in the same direction. If the toy does not work, try different arrangements of the batteries. If it still does not work, check and make sure that the batteries are good. The next step is to look at the switch. The dial type switches are just a simple piece of metal that comes in contact with another piece of metal to make the contact. Sometimes they get out of alignment, or the little metal tab just got bent a little. You can usually visually inspect it to see how it works, and bend it back in place. Toys where the battery cap also serves as the dial can get misaligned. Try removing the cap and placing back on again. A visual inspection of where the contacts should line up may help. One toy that we had that seemed to fail was simply a little out of alignment and if you turned the switch all the way over it would fail. Turning it on almost all the way did the trick.

Lubrication

There are a lot of different types of lubes available, and you will be able to find one that is perfect for you. You can get them in individual "pillow packs" for single use, or in the large pump bottles, or in almost anything in between. There are flavored lubes, lubes you can use underwater, and special lubes for people with alergies

There are a lot of good reasons to use lubes. Women don't always lubricate as much as they might need. Drinking, stress, cold medications, tiredness, and many other factors can affect how much you lubricate, regardless of how aroused you are. A good lube provides a helping hand.

Lubes are also very important for sex toys, since they really do require extra lubrication (they tend to absorb your natural lubrication). Of course, anal sex without a lube is not a good idea. A little lube in the tip of a condom will add a little extra slipping and sliding that can add considerably to the man's pleasure. Lubrication also helps dramatically reduce the chance of a condom breaking. Lubes can also just be fun in general, adding some extra slickeriness to hand jobs and other forms of play.

Flavored lubes contain sucrose, a form of sugar, which is not the best thing to use vaginally as it can lead to yeast infections. They are also not a good lubricant choice for use with sex toys. These are best used just for fun rather than as a lube to enhance intercourse. You can apply them to the penis and the exterior of the vagina (vaginal lips, clitoris), and they are also very nice to use on the breast and nipples. The trick, of course, is that after application you must thoroughly lick them off.
